Chapter 5

Morgan tried to think of a way to reduce Sam's tension. The man was wound tighter than a drum, despite his calm appearance. If he thought it would be accepted, he would get up and massage those tight shoulders. Then he chuckled, drawing Sam's puzzled attention.

In answer, he grinned and said, "Did you have fun proving you weren't impotent? Or sterile?" Given Tracy's apparent nature, it was logical to assume Sam would have had to prove his fertility and ability to function.

Sam gave him a startled look, then slowly smiled as he sat back down. "Yeah, I guess, once I found the right magazines to look at." He snickered. "Let's just say that Tracy would never have been able to compete, too soft."

"Stopped watching her figure after she figured she had the prize?

Sam shook his head. "Nah, I guess physically there was nothing wrong with her.

Never liked big breasts though."

"Like the itty bitty titty committee instead?"

Morgan teased.

Sam grinned. "Something like that."

Morgan handed Sam a fresh soda from the cooler they'd brought with them. They'd filled it with snow to keep their soda and water cold. "My story isn't anything like that, although I did the bum around thing for a few years too, until you hired me. I actually hadn't planned on settling here, but it's been so peaceful. It's a good town."

Sam nodded. "I know what you mean. No bullshit, just decent people who treat you decently to your face and behind your back."

Morgan took a deep breath and decided to tell Sam the whole thing. If it made him too uncomfortable later, he could sleep in the other room. There were plenty of extra blankets.

"I had the typical childhood, a couple of brothers and a sister, parents worked hard, we didn't often have extras, but we had what we needed and plenty of it. Nothing unusual or dramatic at all. I was a jock in high school, cross country and track and field. I graduated with pretty good grades and was working to save money for college. It worked, since my parents let me stay on, rent free, as long as I put two thirds of my check into the college fund. The rest I could do as I pleased with."

Sam smiled. "Sounds like a pretty sweet deal."

Morgan nodded. "Oh yeah, it was. In a year and a half, I actually had a nice chunk of change.

At least until I got arrested..."

Sam gave him an encouraging nod. Morgan appreciated that, because he knew Sam had done a background check done on him, but had never hassled him about what had happened. "I had to pay to get my name changed, legally, but very, very quietly. That costs money."

"I can imagine," Sam murmured. He looked Morgan in the eyes. "What happened?"

Morgan hesitated then nodded, accepting that Sam deserved to know. "I was seeing someone, for several months, someone who was pretty important in town. We were caught one night, making love and he screamed rape, despite the fact it was pretty clear he was fucking me.
